Showing compassion builds character
In the story, it says “And he did not want to be mistrusted now.” The quotation shows Roger has changed because before he met her, he did not really care about being trusted since he was a thief. The word now further emphasize that his character has changed. That is all what Luella does because she shows her compassion. She understands and shares his background. Even though he tries to snatch her purse, she wants him to learn what is right and wrong and change himself. Furthermore, another quotation shows her has changed, which is “Do you need somebody to go to the store,” asked the boy, “maybe to get some milk or something?” It shows he talks very nicely and politely, but more importantly, he offers to help her. This is something that common thieves would never do.
In the move called, “ Make a difference movie”, there is a boy named, Teddy. He is not as good as other students because his attitudes are not good and he always gets low grades in the test. Ms.Thompson, who is Teddy’s teacher, is disappointed because she can barely find his enthusiasm and hard-working at school. However, she realizes that actually he is really smart and a bright child but the problem was his father died. Now she knows the matter and she starts to take care, love, cheer up him. Finally, he becomes an excellent student and he tells to her that she was the best teacher he would ever had in his whole life. That is totally related to between Luella and Roger. Luella gives love, takes care, understands him to be determined not to do it again. If Luella talks negatively about his background, he will never change for the better and his behavior and character would change so much in a bad way. Mr.Thompson and Luella are the same. They both have a positive approach. They choose to ignore the child’s background and focus on their potential to be a better person.
Because Luella understands and shares advice instead of yelling and saying bad things, Roger was able to be confident and determined to build a better character. It is very surprising and wonderful how a person can change someone's mind and character just by being positive.
Betrayal Scars the Soul
There is a poem, Variations by Tommy Stclair, which is relates to betrayal. http://alpoetry.com/poem/6720609. This is quite long but exactly tells how the betrayal scars the soul. One of sentences says "Even though I said I would be by your side. You misused my trust. Now your burning, beneath the earth's crust." Betrayal could happend when you love someone. It sounds a bit paradox. However, if you do not love or like someone, you would never have a chance to betray him or her. That's why your soul tend to be damaged more easily when your trusting person betrays you.
Betrayal is one of the weapons to scar their souls. In Mary Maloney's life, her husband told her to divorce without any specific reasons. That was shocking new to Mary. In the poem, that tells how painful it is and left scars to the soul. The one thing that has to maintain is to stay stronger even though you got betrayed.
